Mitigating Fall Risk

A Meaningful Value Proposition:

Preventing falls, mitigating risk by increasing strength, mobility, resilience and mobility.

The probability of death within 12 months after breaking a hip in a fall increases significantly with age, particularly in older adults. This is often due to complications such as infections, immobility, or underlying health conditions that become more severe after the injury. The statistics vary depending on factors like overall health, the severity of the fracture, and quality of care, but general trends can be observed:

1. Overall Risk

Studies show that 20% to 30% of older adults (typically those aged 65 and above) die within 12 months of a hip fracture. This statistic can rise for those in their 80s or 90s, especially if they have multiple health issues.

2. Age as a Factor

  • Adults  over 80: For those over 80, the mortality risk may be as high as 33% or more within the first year after a hip fracture.  Advanced age often correlates with poorer recovery due to reduced mobility, slower healing, and higher rates of complications.
  • Adults aged 65-80: In this age group, the mortality risk is still substantial, typically between 15% and 25%, depending on overall health and pre-existing conditions.

3. Gender Differences

Men tend to have a higher mortality rate after hip fractures compared to women.  Some studies show that men have a 50% higher risk of dying within a year, possibly related to overall health at the time of the fracture, or lower likelihood of preventative seeking care prior to the injury.

4. Health Conditions

  • People with comorbidities such as heart disease, diabetes, or dementia have a greater risk of mortality following a hip fracture.
  • Frailty, malnutrition, and lower levels of physical activity prior to the injury also contribute to higher mortality rates.

5. Post-Surgery and Recovery Complications

  • Common complications after a hip fracture include pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), infections, or pressure ulcers, all of which can increase mortality rates.
  •  Immobility is a major factor, leading to muscle wasting, cardiovascular strain, and other health declines.
